Masui no Ido (Well)

Masui no Ido

150 years ago in the country of Naniwa which is the present City of Osaka,
there was a sudden fire. It was very windy day and so the fire spread and spread all over the place.
At that time there was only one thing people could do that is to pray for the fire to stop. While praying an old man heard a message from god.
God said to him, 'There is a magic well at Muko Shrine in Nishi no oka and if you spread water from that well on to the fire it will be put out immediately.'
They sent the hayakago (transport) with a big water barrel to Otokuni no sato from Naniwa and found the well in Muko Shrine.
They drew the water from the well, filled the barrel, carried it back splashed it on the fire which gradually faded and went out at last.
That legendary well is called 'Masui no Ido'.
The villagers built a stone torii (gate) by the well in recognition of water and the story is remembered to this day.
