Kaguyahime
Planning a new city around the Kaguya hime (Princess) Romance
'Once upon a time there was a man called Taketori no Okina...'This is the starting phrase of the 'Taketori Monogatari' (Story of Taketori) which was written at the beginning of Heian period. This story is the oldest Japanese children's fairy tale. It is probably the most beautiful and romantic of all Japanese tales.
The main character of this story is Taketori's beautiful and romantic step daughter 'Kaguya hime'.
Many places claim to be the place where the action of the story took place.
Before the Heian-kyo period, Nagaoka-kyo (the modern day Muko City) was a prosperous center of political power.
Muko City has therefore inherited a long history and a cultural atmosphere.
The historical Nishino oka hill full of mystery lies in the west part of Muko City and is completely covered with wonderful green bamboo.
This could be the origin of the 'Taketori Monogatari'.
Everybody wants to believe that the action of 'Taketori Monogatari' took place and was written in this beautiful bamboo forest town 1200 years ago.
Now it is planned to make enhance the historical, cultural and romantic aspects of Muko City using the ideas from the Taketori Monogatari and Kaguya hime'.
The 'Kaguya hime parade' started in 1992. In this parade Muko City citizens wear the costumes of the characters from the Taketori Monogatari including costumes of Kaguya hime herself and her step father Taketori no okina. They walk around Muko City.
In 1994 Muko City established the 'Muko Kaguya taiko' (Japanese drum) which is made from bamboo grown around Muko City.
From 1995 Muko City started to hold regular conferences with all three cities and four towns related to Kaguya hime to plan to the dream of a romantic city in her image.
