Witty Danbei

Witty Danbei

In 1592 at the time of Bunroku no eki, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the governor ordered all the Japanese feudal lords or daimyou to invade Korea.
More than 100,000 soldiers were mobilized and marched on the Saigoku Kaido (road).
At that time one of the farmers, whose name was Danbei, living along the Kaidou in Otokuni gun Shima no machi was unexpectedly lucky.
When the long procession ended, he heard the sound of horse's hooves as one of the soldiers came into his garden.
The soldier said that Hideyoshi Toyotomi was very thirsty and wanted Danbei to make tea for him.
Danbei made the tea in a hurry. Hideyoshi Toyotomi appeared from his group and looked in the direction of Muko Shrine. He pointed and asked Danbei to tell me the name of the forest he could see.
Actually there was no name for the forest at that time.
Danbei was the most witty man in the village so he answered immediately, 'Sir, it is called Katsuyama no mori (forest of victory)'.
When Hideyoshi Toyotomi heard the word of Katsuyama (victory) he said 'What a witty man you are.
Just before we are going to war you told us the word 'victory' this is a good luck.'
Hideyoshi Toyotomi was very pleased so he gave Danbei a gold coin called a 'fun', a house, and the name Nakamura as a family surname.
The origin of this name is Owari Aichi gun Nakamura where Hideyoshi Toyotomi came from.
After that incident everybody started to call that forest 'Katsuyama no mori' and Danbei's house existed until about 1914 (Meiji 35).
