市長賞「Two of my hometowns」濱田 海（勝山中学3年生）

One's hometown is a place that has deep personal significance.Most people have only one hometown, the place where they were born or where they grew up. Is it possible to have more than one?

I have two hometowns. One is a little town in outer Melbourne called Eltham, where I was born. Eltham is a place filled with nature, with beautiful native trees and rolling hills. The house I lived in was surrounded by lush bushland and animals. I could often see kangaroos hopping through the yard or grazing on the green lawn in front of our house. I could also awake to the beautiful sound of the native birds. Glowing up in Eltham taught me the importance of engaging with the nature world.

My other hometown is Muko-city in Kyoto, where I am living now. I have been living here for seven years. I am fascinated by the history of Muko-city, having once been the capital of Japan. Sometimes I have met archaeologists in the local area, digging and finding tiles and fragments from the ancient palace. I really enjoy learning more and more about the history of Muko-city. It continues to teach me the importance of learning about the past.

I am a blend of Australian and Japanese. I love both of these cultures. Living in two countries, I can appreciate aspects of each of them. I feel it is enriching to experience other cultures, because it broadens life experience. It is good to see one's own country from a fresh point of view.

Eltham and Muko-city are very special places for me. I have lots of precious memories in both of them. I will forever appreciate the importance of these places, because they make me the person I am now. My dream is to travel around the globe, and experience many cultures. I want to see how people live in other parts of the planet. If we look at the world, we can sometimes notice disharmony between nations. It is natural for people to love their native land, but I don't think this should lead to division. I believe we could all learn how to unite as people who share the same home, Earth.

ふるさとは、心のよりどころとなる場所です。ほとんどの人には生まれ育ったふるさとが1つあります。ふるさとを一つ以上持つことは可能でしょうか。

僕にはふるさとが二つあります。一つは、僕の生まれたメルボルン郊外のエルサムという小さな町です。エルサムは自然に囲まれたところで、オーストラリア独特の木々や、なだらかな丘があちこちにあります。僕が幼い頃育った家はブッシュの中にあり、動物たちがよく訪れるようなところでした。カンガルーが庭にきたり、家の前の芝生の上で寝そべっていたりすることがありました。朝には鳥たちの鳴き声で目が覚めました。そのようなエルサムの町で生まれ育つことで自然と触れ合う大切さを学びました。

僕のもう一つのふるさとは、今住んでいる京都の向日市です。僕は向日市に引っ越してきて7年目になります。遠い昔に日本の都であった向日市の歴史に魅了されました。家の近くで長岡宮跡から瓦や断片などを発掘している考古学者にも会ったことがあります。僕にとって、向日市の歴史を探り続けることはとても楽しいです。向日市に住んでいるおかげで、歴史について学ぶ大切さを学びました。

僕には日本人とオーストラリア人の両親がいます。どちらの国も文化も好きです。両方の国で生活してみて、両国の文化の良さを感じることができました。僕は、自国とは違う文化を体験してみることは大事だと思います。なぜなら、人生経験が広がり、自分の国を新たな視点から見ることができるからです。

エルサムと向日市は僕にとってとても大切な場所です。どちらも僕のふるさとです。二つの町には大切な思い出がたくさんあります。エルサムと向日市は今の自分を作ったと言える場所です。だから、その大切さは絶対に忘れません。僕の夢は世界を旅して、様々な文化を体験することです。世界中で人々がどのような生活をしているのかを五感で体験してみたいです。今の世界を見てみると、国同士の不調和に気付くことがあります。自分の故郷を愛することは自然なことですが、それが国同士の分断につながるのはよくないと思います。僕は、地球上の人々が国境を越えてひとつになればいいと思います。「地球」という共通のふるさとを持つのだから。

教育長賞「My Dream ～why I study English～」山下 青葉（寺戸中学3年生）

Please imagine.  You’re in front of JR Mukomachi Station and you see a tourist from a foreign country looking at a map.  He comes to you and asks, “Do you speak English?"  What would you say?  Wouldn't it be cool if you could say with confidence, “Sure.  No problem.  Can I help you?"  The tourist looks happy and says, “Muko City is famous for spicy food, right?"  "Yes.  I can recommend a restaurant called Kirinen.  Actually, I went there with my family and tried the level2 spiciness ramen.  It was pretty spicy, so I coughed and coughed.  But it was delicious."  The tourist smiles and says, “Wow, thanks!  That’s a great recommendation.  Do you know anything else I can do here?"  "Yes, I definitely recommend Muko Shrine.  It’s famous because it’s the model of the main shrine of Meiji Jingu, which has the largest number of visitors of all shrines."  If this would happen to you, how would you handle it?  Today, I’d like to talk about reasons why I study English.

The first reason is that I’d like to communicate with people around the world.  In 2017, 7.4 million foreign tourists traveled to Kyoto.  If you can speak English, you'll have a chance to help foreign tourists someday.

Secondly, being able to communicate with foreign people gives me chances to learn about different cultures.  I had a chance to talk to a Canadian man before.  There is a saying in Japanese “to use something like hot water."  His Japanese wife uses water luxuriously.  However, he uses water with care as if it were a valuable thing.  He said to me, “When I boil broccoli, my wife throws away the boiled water, but I don’t throw it away!  I use it to make bread, or water the flowers."  Before listening to him, I didn't realize that water is so precious.  I understood how important water is for people in some foreign countries.

Recently, I had a chance to study SDGs in school.  Goal 6 of the SDGs is “Clean Water and Sanitation all over the World."  Did you know, that nearly 1,000 children die because of unclean water conditions every day?  By talking to a Canadian man, I was able to learn about different cultures and the problems we all face today.  It became a personal matter for me. I could expand my horizons.

The third reasons is, I want to get a job where I use English in the future. Especially, I want to be a teacher, because I want many people to know how fun it can be to study English.  I remember it was so interesting for me to listen and speak in English when I started learning.  It would be wonderful if I can share that excitement with other people in the same way I experienced.  Fulfilling my dream won’t be easy, but I will try my best using every opportunity I have.  There are many different jobs where I use English besides teaching.  I hope you can find your joy in English!

想像してみてください。向日町駅の前にいて、外国の人が地図を見ている場面を。彼はあなたのところへ来て、「あなたは英語を話しますか？」と聞きます。あなたなら何と言いますか？「もちろん。問題無いですよ。お手伝いしましょうか？」と自信を持って言えたら格好良くないですか？その観光客は嬉しそうに「向日市は辛い食べ物で有名なんですよね？」と言います。「はい。麒麟園というレストランをおすすめします。実は、私は家族とそこへ行ってレベル2の辛さのラーメンにチャレンジしました。すごく辛かったので、何度も咳き込みました。でも美味しかったです。」彼は笑って「ありがとう！他に、ここでできることはあるかな？」と言います。「はい。絶対に向日神社をお勧めします。明治神宮の本宮のモデルになったので有名なんです。明治神宮は全ての神社の中で一番訪れる人数が多いんですよ。」もしこんなことがあなたに起きたら、あなたならどうしますか？今日、私はなぜ私が英語を学習するのかをお話しします。

一つ目の理由は、世界中の人とコミュニケーションがとりたいということです。2017年には、740万人の外国人が京都に旅行に来ています。もし英語が話せたら、いつか外国人観光客を助けるチャンスがあるかもしれません。

二つ目に、外国の人とコミュニケーションをとれることで、異なる文化について学ぶことができます。私は以前、カナダの人と話す機会がありました。日本語に、「湯水のように使う」という表現があります。そのカナダ人の男性の奥さんは水を贅沢に使うそうです。しかし、彼自身は水をとても価値のあるものとして扱います。彼は、「ブロッコリーをゆでた後、妻はお湯を捨てるけど、僕は捨てない。パンを作るのにも、植物に水をやるのにも使えるから。」と言いました。その話を聴く前は、水がそんなにも貴重なものだとは知りませんでした。外国の人にとっては、どれだけ水が大切なものなのかを私は理解しました。

最近、私は学校でSDGsについて学ぶ機会がありました。目標6は、「安全な水とトイレを世界中に」です。清潔でない水のせいで、毎日約1000人の子どもたちが亡くなっていることを知っていますか？そのカナダ人の男性を話すことで、私は異なる文化や、今私たちが直面している問題について学ぶことができました。それは私にとって個人的な関心事となりました。視野を広げることができたのです。

最後の理由は、将来英語を使う職業に就きたいということです。特に、私は教師になりたいです。理由は多くの人に英語を勉強することの楽しさを知ってほしいからです。英語を学習し始めた時、英語を聞いたり話したりすることがとても面白かったのを覚えています。私が経験したように、この興奮を他の人と共有できたら素晴らしいことだと思います。夢を叶えることは簡単ではありませんが、持てる全ての機会を使ってベストを尽くしたいと思います。教える以外にも英語を使う職業はたくさんあります。皆さんも英語の楽しさを見つけることを願っています。

優秀賞「The Path to Becoming an illustrator」藤岡 希乃（勝山中学2年生）

I want to be an illustrator. Do you know what an illustration is? The etymology of illustration came from the Latin words “illustratus’’ and means “to make it easier to understand’’.

I like drawing pictures. I also like to see pictures because many messages are hidden in one picture. I've been drawing since I couldn't even write. When I was in elementary school, I started to cast shadows and draw backgrounds with a special pen. At this time I could express the weather and seasons in the picture. Now I can draw more detail by using a pen tablet. It enables me to draw the character’s facial expressions and emotions.

Although I had made progress in drawing, I hesitated to show my picture to my friends. One day, a friend in my class told me, “Draw a picture for me, please.” I drew an anime character on the edge of a paper. Then a lot of classmates gathered around me. Everyone said “Wow!” “Who is this girl?” They were interested in my picture. Since then many classmates began to ask me to draw their favorite character. I was very happy when I heard that they displayed my pictures in their room. I found that I could make people happier through my drawings and I decided to be an illustrator.

The works of an illustrator are various. For example, illustrations for picture books and magazines, products packaging, social games and so on. Recently, project mapping has attracted a lot of attentions. What I want to do the most is to draw illustrations for music videos. Those videos have a story along the music and their illustrations match the lyrics. The atmospheres and images of music can be changed by its illustrations. They give a strong impression on the listener’s heart. I want to be an illustrator who can share feelings with people listening to music. I want to be the illustrator who speaks for one’s feelings, and encourage others.

私は将来イラストレーターになりたいです。皆さんはイラストとは何か知っていますか？イラストレーションの語源は、ラテン語に由来し、「わかりやすくするもの」という意味です。     

私は絵を描くことが好きです。そして、見ることも好きです。なぜなら一枚の絵の中にたくさんのメッセージが隠されているからです。文字が書けない頃から絵を描いていました。小学生の時は、専用のペンで影をつけたり、背景を描いたりし始めました。この時は、自分の好きなものの他に天候や季節を表せるようになりました。今は、ペンタブレットで、より細かく絵を描くようになりました。それを使うことによって、キャラクターの表情、そして心情を伝えるようにしています。

たくさん表現をできるようになったけど、人に見せるのは苦手でした。ある日、クラスの友達が「絵を描いてー。」と私に言いました。私は紙の端にアニメのキャラクターを描きました。すると、たくさんの人が集まってきました。みんなは「すごい！」「この子誰―？」と言い、そして興味を持ってくれました。それからは、「絵を描いて。」とよく頼まれるようになりました。私の絵を部屋に飾ってくれたと聞いたとき凄く嬉しかったです。自分の絵で人が喜んでくれることを知り、イラストレーターになりたいと思いました。

イラストレーターの仕事はたくさんあります。例えば、絵本や雑誌の挿絵、商品のパッケージ、ソーシャルゲームなど。最近ではプロジェクトマッピングが注目を集めています。私が最もしたいことは、音楽動画のイラストを描くことです。なぜなら、歌詞に合ったイラストを何枚も描いて、一つの曲で一つの物語ができることに感動したからです。イラストによって曲の雰囲気やイメージが変わります。また、聞く人の心に強く印象に残ったりします。イラストがその曲を聴くきっかけになったりもします。私は、曲とともに聞く人と気持ちを共有したり、気持ちを代弁したり、誰かを励ましたり、感動を与えたりできる、そんなイラストレーターになりたいです。
